last weekend was the RECLINK COMMUNITY CUP. Thanks to all who came down it was an awesome day again with Reclink making heaps of money to help fund their programs for the upcoming year. The footy was fun, but the true victory on the day was the unearthing of the photo (seen at the top!) of Nicky “Elvis” Winmar and James Brown. This came from Paul Stewart (singer from the Painters and Dockers) who was working as a journalist at the time and helped persuade James to meet up with Nicky. After telling James about the stand Nicky took at Victoria Park in 1993 against racism he was more than happy to meet with him.

REMi 'Unofficial' Album Launch at Northside

That’s right, another LIVE INSTORE at Northside! In fact, we have several planned for upcoming months so stay tuned. This time Northside Records is proud to host the magic that is REMi. A young Northsider who is making big waves. REMi is about to drop his new album “Raw X Infinity” and will be showcasing the new tunes right here! This will be one of those times as you will be able to say you saw him back when..….

The instore kicks off around 2pm and will also feature a YOUNG EZY, a prize winner from AFRICA’S GOT TALENT. Young Ezy will be performing the song ‘Aspire’ that made heads turn at AGT. Northside DJs and friends will be keeping it HIP HOP all day long. Word.

Raw X Infinity CDs will be available on the day. Can’t wait – Cop some digital action right now.

SOUL AMBASSADOR

You might think its easy running a soul record store. Well, think again. Sometimes the job entails that you must travel the world spreading the soul word like cultured butter. That is just what we are doing! Incredible bands like THE BAMBOOS, SHAOLIN AFRONAUTS, OSCAR KEY SUNG and JONES JNR are going over to TOKYO this weekend to show the Japanese how we get down – down under.

Joining them will be two DJ’s JUMPS and myself, CHRIS GILL. We will be playing all local goodness and keeping the vibe alive. If you are in TOKYO – come and see what we got. The Public Opinion Afro Orchestra

With the federal budget about to drop like smallpox, make sure you set at least $18 aside until Saturday May 31st so you can dance away the pain with The Public Opinion Afro Orchestra at Howler in Brunswick. The POAO will be joined by Melbourne’s heaviest funk combo Deep Street Soul, plus The Vibraphonic Orkestra who bring a unique blend of afro, electronica & dub. DJ Manchild will be serving up the edutainment between the bands. The POAO are firing on all cylinders and promise a night of fire.

– KERBSIDE COLLECTION – SATURDAY 26th APRIL at 2pm at NORTHSIDE RECORDS

Flying into town this weekend for the FUNK night at the PRINCE are Brisbane jazz funk band KERBSIDE COLLECTION. Exploding onto the world with a crazy BBoy version of Dizzy Gillespie’s “Night In Tunisia” this quartet soon released a solid funk record on French Label Legere, which was mastered by Jake from Cookin On Three Burners. (who are playing this Thursday night.). The band will feature Jules (from Clairy Browne & TBR) as a replacement ace of BASS. Also Ravi Welsh – Guitar, and Jason ‘Paprika’ Bell – pots ‘n’ pans. They plan to hit a short set of laid back funky jazz for a saturday afternoon. Dusty West Coast flavoured 60’s Jazz, swing and rare groove. Running some classic 60’s West Coast jazz and Blue Note numbers from the like of Wes Montgomery, Grant Green and George Benson plus some stripped down versions of our originals
With the successful release of their album MIND THE CURB, they have also embarked on an ambitious REMIX project featuring BILLY HOYLE, ENNIO STYLES, this will be out very soon. But in the meantime there will be giveaways of a mix cd that Paprika did and also copies of the album for sale.
